Survival Guide.

Everything you need before, during and after the festival. Don't arrive unprepared.

Airport to City
RE7 / RB14 Regional TrainFastest option. Every 30 min to Ostbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof. About 30 min ride. Use a 48h Umweltkarte for best value.4.40 EUR single, Zone ABC
Airport Express X7 / Bus 163Good for south Berlin. X7 connects to U-Bahn Rudow. Slower but handy for specific areas.4.40 EUR single
Taxi / Bolt / Uber40 to 60 EUR to central Berlin. Use Bolt — usually cheaper than Uber. Fine for late night arrivals with luggage.40-60 EUR est.
Cash vs Card
Berlin is more cash-heavy than most European cities. Many bars, clubs, Spatikaufs and food stalls are cash only. Always carry 50 to 100 EUR in small bills.
Use Sparkasse or Deutsche Bank ATMs to avoid fees. Avoid standalone ATMs in clubs or tourist spots — they charge 5 EUR+ per withdrawal.
Public transport explained
Download the BVG Fahrinfo app before you land. Official Berlin transit app — real-time U-Bahn and S-Bahn departures, route planning, buy tickets in-app. Free on iOS and Android.
S-BahnSurface metro. Fast, covers city ring and outer areas. S3, S5, S7, S9 run east to west. Essential for cross-city trips.
U-BahnUnderground metro. U1 and U3 great for Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. U8 covers Neukolln. Runs 24h on weekends.
Night BusesRun all night on weekdays when U-Bahn stops. Prefixed N. Useful for midweek late events.

Essential apps
BVG
BVG FahrinfoOfficial Berlin transit app. Real-time departures, route planning, buy tickets in-app. Download before you land.

Refillable water bottle
Light jacket or layer — Berlin weather shifts fast
Power bank
BVG Fahrinfo app downloaded and offline maps ready
EU plug adapter if needed
Sunscreen for outdoor stages
Earplugs for sleeping in nightlife zones
Extra snack budget — you will need it
Festival etiquette
Ask before sharing anything. The vibe is open but consent is everything.
Use designated consumption areas. Be mindful of those around you.
Pack out what you pack in. Berlin festival crowds pride themselves on a clean space.
Berlin local tips Spati culture
The Spatkauf — Berlin's beating heartCorner shops open deep into the night, often 24h. You grab cheap beers, snacks, papers and stand outside. Completely normal to hang at a Spati with a Pfand beer at 2am. Find the one near your accommodation — it becomes your HQ.
Sunday shutdowns
Almost everything closes on Sundays — supermarkets, pharmacies, most shops. Stock up Saturday night. Spatis, bakery cafes at train stations and restaurants stay open.
Club etiquette
No photos on the floorMany clubs tape cameras. Respect this absolutely. You will be removed for filming the dancefloor.
The door is realGo in pairs, dress down, be sober and calm. No large groups. Door staff are legendary here.
Arrive very lateClubs don't get going until 2 or 3am. Going at midnight is pointless. Weekend sets run through to Sunday afternoon.
Tourist mistakes to avoid
Don't cycle on the pavement — illegal, and locals will tell you. Use the red bike lanes.
Don't cross on a red pedestrian light. 5 to 15 EUR fine and visible social judgement.
Avoid overpriced tourist restaurants near Checkpoint Charlie. Walk 10 min for food half the price.

Solo traveler guide
Safety basicsBerlin is very safe solo. Share your location with someone at home. Keep your accommodation address saved offline. Stay aware on late-night S-Bahn.
Meeting peopleFestival energy makes solo socialising natural. Hostel common rooms, Spati benches, or the festival queue — everyone is there for the same thing.
Recommended hostelsGenerator Berlin (Mitte), Huttenpalast (Neukolln), EastSeven (Prenzlauer Berg) — all strong solo-traveller social scenes.
Solo-friendly spotsMauerpark flea market on Sundays, any Spati with outdoor seating, Tempelhofer Feld — great for relaxed conversation with strangers.
BVG Fahrinfo is essential for solo navigation — real-time departures, route planner, in-app ticket purchase. Download before you arrive and you will never be stranded.
Recovery spots
Tempelhofer FeldFormer airfield turned massive park. Lie on the old runway, watch cyclists and kite flyers. The ultimate Berlin detox.
Stadtbad MitteStunning historic public pool. An early morning swim resets everything. Open from 6:30am on weekdays.
TiergartenCentral park for a slow morning walk. Cafe am Neuen See has lakeside beers — perfectly serene after a heavy day.
Vabali SpaBalinese-inspired spa near Tiergarten. Book ahead. Sauna, outdoor pools, total silence.
Markthalle NeunThursday Street Food Thursday 6 to 10pm or weekend market. Gentle buzz, incredible food.
Brunch cultureAnna Blume in Prenzlauer Berg for spectacular cakes. Roamers in Neukolln for all-day brunch. Queue early.
Berlin tap water is excellent — say Leitungswasser bitte at any cafe for free tap water.
Pharmacies are marked with a red A sign. Search Notdienstapotheke Berlin for your nearest 24h duty pharmacy.
